NetherRealm returns to their roots today with the release of Mortal Kombat X for PS4, PC, and Xbox One. PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers will be able to snag a copy later this summer. The latest entry in the series features not only a lineage theme—Sonya and Johnny’s daughter Cassie as well as Jax’s daughter Jacqui join the roster—but also a faction element and expanded move lists. Faction Wars is a persistent mode that tracks online performance and assigns earned points to the various factions, and each week the winning faction’s members will be rewarded with unlocked items. Characters also have three different fighting styles, each with their own focus and moves. Single player has also been beefed up with Living Towers, timed challenges that update regularly, as well as the return of Test Your Might, Test Your Luck, and the Krypt with its numerous unlockables.
A variety of downloadable packs are also available for purchase. These include sets of characters and skins, including Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees, the Predator, a Carl Weathers skin for Jax, previous combatants Tanya and Tremor, and an assortment of ‘klassic’ skins. The $29.99 Kombat Pack includes all of the various sets as well as the Samurai Pack, with skins for Jingu Kitana, Ronin Kenshi, and Samurai Shinnok, plus early access to all downloadable content.
A mobile version of Mortal Kombat X is also available for free for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. An Android version is currently in the works. Mobile gamers will be able to unlock content for the console or PC versions through the app, which is said to be a mixture of fighting and card collecting. A WB Play account is needed to sync the games.
