Fans of The Last of Us can see what happened to Ellie before she met Joel today in a new single-player downloadable prologue, Left Behind. The Naughty Dog-developed add-on explores Ellie’s relationship with her friend Riley as the two attend school in the Boston quarantine zone and later decide whether to stay in the zone or join the Fireflys. Despite being set before The Last of Us, you’re going to want to finish it before playing Left Behind. And if you haven’t played The Last of Us yet, go ahead and free up a weekend and get to it.

Sony reveals cloud-based streaming, rental service PS Now

Sony has announced PlayStation Now, the Gaiki-powered streaming service that will use cloud technology to allow players access to PS3 games on their PS3, PS4, PS Vita, and Bravia TVs. The service is scheduled to go live first for PS4 this summer and later for the rest of the Sony family, including eight models of the 2014 Bravia TV line (KDL-R400B is the exception). Sony plans to eventually expand the service further to include non-Sony products, allowing gamers to “enjoy instant access to a game wherever there’s Wi-Fi connectivity” along with seamless transition between devices. The service will feature the ability to rent specific titles or subscribe for access to the library. There will be online multiplayer and trophy support. For those curious about the system’s integration with the current setup, the PS Blog responded to a community question that the PS Store will continue to offer downloadable titles in addition to PS Now’s streaming services.

PlayStation 4 to be playable at Comic-Con International 2013

The PlayStation 4 is still several months away, but next week, Comic-Con attendees will be able to get some hands-on time with the system. In addition to being able to check out some new peripherals, including the camera and headset, gamers will be able to try three titles for themselves at SCEA’s booth (#301): #DriveClub, Knack, and Octodad: Dadliest Catch. There will also be demos of five PS3 games, including Beyond: Two Souls and Diablo III, 10 PS Mobile games, and six PS Vita games on display, detailed below, as well as staff to help attendees make their way around each title. Some gamer-centric panels were also detailed, including a The Last of US signing and another discussing Telltale’s Walking Dead series.

The Last of Us sells over three million in less than three weeks

Naughty Dog has scored another hit with The Last of Us. Sony is reporting that the latest from the Uncharted developer has sold 3.4 million units, counting both physical units and PSN download copies, as of July 3. The announcement also stated that it is the fastest-selling PS3 game of 2013, having reached its numbers after less than three weeks on the market.

Gamers looking to cap off an excitement week of E3 reveals (see: $399 PS4) can try their hand at surviving a new post-apocalyptic adventure, The Last of Us. Naughty Dog’s third-person action title takes place 20 years after a virus has ravaged humanity and left the US as an overgrown wasteland, filled with violent survivors and infected monstrosities. It’s through this new urban jungle that players must lead Joel and Ellie. Ellie is bound for a group known as the Fireflies, and Joel is the man responsible for seeing her to safety. With limited resources, players must scrounge for whatever they can find, using stealth to snatch materials and a crafting system to create new weapons.

Uncharted developer announces The Last of Us for PlayStation 3

Uncharted (and Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter) creator Naughty Dog is set to bring a new IP to the PlayStation 3 with the recently announced The Last of Us. Looking like a cross between The Road and I Am Legend, the studio has described the upcoming survival title as “a genre-defining experience” that tells the story of a world ravaged by a plague and those survivors left to eke out an existence. A pair of travelers, Joel and Ellie, will work together to scrounge for food and face off against others for the few remaining resources as they make their way across what’s left of the United States.
