Developer- and Publisher-specific Articles: Survival Horror
After freaking out PSVR owners with its unsettling demo, Resident Evil 7 biohazard has launched for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Described as “an incredibly realistic horror experience,” the first-person survival-horror title puts players in the role of distraught husband Ethan Winters. Ethan is searching for his missing wife in Dulvey, Louisiana, when he comes upon a seemingly abandoned plantation. During his investigation, he comes across the strange Baker family, who attempts to stop him by being murderous freaks. After uncovering the mystery, players will be able to continue with post-release support that will include several downloadable packs. Up first, and set to launch “shortly,” is Banned Footage Vol. 1 and Banned Footage Vol. 2, which will add two scenarios as well as a bonus mode. An additional story episode, Not a Hero, is also set to launch later this year, and will be free when it goes live this spring.
A new horror compilation has gone live today for PS4. Frictional Games’ Amnesia Collection brings players The Dark Descent, A Machine for Pigs, and the Justine expansion for the first time to PS4 via PSN. All three rely on atmosphere rather than mayhem, as players must stick to the shadows and avoid making contact with enemies in order to survive.
Just in time for Halloween, NIS has released their latest survival-horror thriller Yomawari: Night Alone. As a young girl lost in a strange dimension, players must find their dog, Pogo, and older sister. Strange monsters are roaming her now-deformed hometown, and to continue her search, she must hide, trick, or run from them. The physical version also comes bundled with a copy of the 2015 puzzle platformer htoL#NiQ: The Firefly Diary.
Capcom has announced that the Resident Evil 7 biohazard demo ‘Kitchen’ has been releasing alongside PlayStation VR. The brief look features a kitchen that “provides the unsettling backdrop for a tense scenario that draws players into a hyper-realistic virtual world like never before.” Players who pick up a headset won’t have to download the trial, either, as it is included on a disc included in the PSVR package.
NIS has begun the countdown to the release of their upcoming survival-horror title Yomawari: Night Alone. And they are kicking it off with a new trailer appropriately titled Countdown to Nightmare. The video offers a short look at what players are in for as a young girl searching for her sister and dog in a strange, dangerous dimension filled with monsters.
Capcom revealed some new details about Resident Evil 7 at Tokyo Game Show. The Beginning Hour teaser, exclusive to PS Plus subscribers, became the most-downloaded demo on PS4 during its release week, and has surpassed 3 million downloads to date. All PS4 owners will be able to try the game tomorrow, when an updated demo goes live. Titled Twilight, the trial will offer more content by opening up additional areas of the mansion. A new batch of media was also released and gives an early look at combat. Lastly, the deluxe versions, previously $79.99, have been expanded with an extra playable story episode, which has bumped up the price to $89.99. Those who have pre-ordered the digital deluxe edition in North America will received the new episode for free.
Capcom broke out a new Resident Evil 7 biohazard trailer for Gamescom, titled “Lantern.” The gameplay footage introduces Marguerite Baker, one of the long-unseen residents of a plantation located in Dulvey, Louisiana. The video runs over three minutes long and is presented in the format of a found-footage film. Attendees can check out the Beginning Hour demo in PS VR mode at Sony’s booth in Hall 7, B-010.
A new trailer has been released for Yomawari: Night Alone. The footage shows a little of the haunted town that players will explore as well as some of its ghostly inhabitants. Its release coincides with an update to the official site that offers additional insight into the various spirits and monsters that roam the land. A few bonuses were also uploaded, including several new wallpapers.
Ice-Pick Lodge has released the first batch of screens from their upcoming survival-themed horror-ish title Pathologic. A reimagining of a 2005 story-driven adventure, Pathologic tasks players with solving the mystery behind the raging Sand Plague within 12 days. Players take on the role of one of three specialists, and each day they will face new quests and uncover new story elements. Each character is said to offer a different experience, with a rational scientist, local shaman’s son, and a half-crazy amnesiac making up the trio. The game will feature elements from horror and survival titles, such as having to scavenge for resources, fight bandits, uncover strange rites, and stave off hunger and thirst.
