PlayStation 4 surpasses 50 million units sold, software 396 million

Sony has announced that PS4 has sold through more than 50 million units as of December 6. They also noted that they had their “best ever Black Friday week in the history of PlayStation.” The numbers include both the standard PS4 and PS4 Pro, and represent a footprint in five regions and 122 countries. PS4 software sales were also noted to have surpassed 369.6 million, excluding add-on content, in global retail and digital sales as of December 4.

Sony (finally) reveals PS4 Pro, PS4 Slim, and new peripherals

After weeks of leaks, and months of speculation, Sony has officially revealed the next release in the PlayStation family, PlayStation 4 Pro. The Pro is scheduled to launch on November 10 for $399, offering an extra rear USB port, two more front USB ports, a 1TB hard drive, and an upgraded CPU and GPU. The added horsepower will improve graphics, offer consistent frame rates, and support 4K. 4K will also be supported for video streaming and playback, though not for Blu-ray. All PS4 games will be in 1080p, and supported titles will have improved frame rates. HDR support will also be added to current PS4 models through a patch. Joining the Pro is a new slim 500GB model for $299, which will go for sale on September 15. It’s said to cut power consumption by 28-34%, weight by 16-25%, and volume by over 30% According to Sony, all future games will run on every PS4 system.

PlayStation VR to launch this October for $399

Sony has revealed details of their upcoming virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR. Previously known under the codename Project Morpheus, PS VR will be released this October for $399. The announcement noted that over 230 publishers and developers are currently working on titles for the headset, including Ubisoft, CCP, Uber Entertainment, and 2K Games. Dice and Lucasfilm are also said to be working on a VR-compatible component for Star Wars Battlefront. PlayStation 4 sells 5.7 million holiday 2015, 35 million in software

Sony has announced that the PS4 sold through 5.7 million units during the 2015 holiday season. The announcement also noted that, as of January 3, the system has more than 35.9 million units around the world. Software-wise, 35 million copies were sold in stores and via PS Store as of the same date. PS Plus also saw a jump in membership, with a 60% increase over the previous year’s holiday season.

Kojima Productions to develop PlayStation 4-exclusive title

Sony has announced that they have signed an agreement with Hideo Kojima for a PS4 exclusive title from the newly reformed Kojima Productions. Following his departure from Konami, the subsidiary, known for the Metal Gear Solid series, was reestablished as an independent studio. The unnamed title will be the studio’s debut release.

PlayStation 4 getting price drop to $349.99 on Oct. 9, bundles detailed

Sony has announced that the PlayStation 4 will be getting a price drop of $50 to $349.99 as of October 9. Additionally, several bundles were also updated for the new price, including the Nathan Drake Collection Bundle with a 500 GB unit for $349.99 and a Canada-only NHL 16 Bundle with a 500 GB unit for $429.99. PS4 Star Wars Battlefront bundles, Super Star Wars PSN announced

Two new Star Wars-themed PlayStation 4bundles are slated to hit stores this holiday season. Both bundles are scheduled to launch on November 17, the same day as Star Wars Battlefront’s release, and feature system and controller artwork inspired by Darth Vader. The other bundle comes packed with Disney Infinity extras, including the game, a base, a Boba Fett figure, and the Rise Against the Empire Set Pack. In addition, both will come with vouchers for four digital titles, announced today: Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Racer Revenge, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, and Star Wars Bounty Hunter. All four titles will feature updated visuals as well as support for trophies.

PlayStation Now accessible on select Samsung Smart TVs

Select Samsung Smart TVs can now stream PlayStation 3 titles using PlayStation Now. The subscription- and rental-based service allows owners of supported models the chance to stream PlayStation 3 titles without a system by utilizing the PS Now app through Samsung’s Smart Hub. The app includes all of the traditional features, so games operate as if they are being played on a system, such as Trophies, multiplayer, and cloud-based saving. Games are played using DualShock 4 controllers, which are synced after the app is started.

PlayStation 4 Yukimura update to add features, accessibility options

Sony has announced that they are prepping the next update for PS4. Update version 2.50, codenamed Yukimura, is scheduled to go live on March 26 and is set to add a number of features. Some of the additions include Suspend/Resume, allowing players to pause their game by putting the system into Rest Mode and resuming by pressing the PlayStation button on the controller; the ability to back-up data onto an external USB drive, such as game saves, settings, screenshots, patches, and video clips; and improved accessibility options, with functions to zoom, and invert colors along with enlarged text and text-to-speech for the interface, apps, and browser. The new visibility options will not apply to games or third-party apps, though they will be added to PS Vita and mobile devices via PS App in their own respective updates whenever Yukimura is released.
