PlayStation 4 Yukimura update to add features, accessibility options

Sony has announced that they are prepping the next update for PS4. Update version 2.50, codenamed Yukimura, is scheduled to go live on March 26 and is set to add a number of features. Some of the additions include Suspend/Resume, allowing players to pause their game by putting the system into Rest Mode and resuming by pressing the PlayStation button on the controller; the ability to back-up data onto an external USB drive, such as game saves, settings, screenshots, patches, and video clips; and improved accessibility options, with functions to zoom, and invert colors along with enlarged text and text-to-speech for the interface, apps, and browser. The new visibility options will not apply to games or third-party apps, though they will be added to PS Vita and mobile devices via PS App in their own respective updates whenever Yukimura is released.

Sony releases new show Powers on PS Store, first episode up for free

Sony has released the first three episodes of their new scripted original series Powers. Available on PS Store, the show, co-produced with Sony Pictures Television, centers around superheros and the impact that their powers have on their lives, as some turn evil while others struggle with their abilities or to cope after losing them. The first episode can be viewed here for free (and below, in case you hate clicking links), and PS Plus members have access to the first three episodes, as well as the remaining season, for free. New episodes are scheduled to launch every Tuesday until April 28.

PlayStation 4 surpasses 20.2 units sold, Morpheus gets new features

Sony has announced that the PlayStation 4 has, as of March 1, sold more than 20.2 million units worldwide. The system is now available in 123 countries and regions around the globe. Sony also used this year’s Game Developers Conference to unveil the latest prototype of their virtual reality system, Project Morpheus. Several changes have been made since the headset was debuted last March, based on developer and consumer feedback. The major alterations include a new motion-blur- and flicker-reducing 5.7-inch 1920 x RGB x 1080 resolution OLED display, replacing a 5-inch LCD; support for 120fps output, along with a PS4 update to add support whenever connected to a headset; three more LEDs, nine total, to reduce latency and improve tracking accuracy; and changes to make the headset lighter and easier to put on and remove.

Columbus Nova acquires, rebrands Sony Online Entertainment

Sony has sold its MMO-focused division Sony Online Entertainment to New York-based investment management firm Columbus Nova. According to the new owners, “SOE will now operate as an independent game development studio and will continue to focus on creating quality online games, providing excellent service to its extensive player base, while centering on its untapped potential as a multi-platform online gaming company.” As part of the transition from Sony, the studio has been renamed to Daybreak Game Company.

PSN adding PS Music, PS Video, and support for Spotify

Sony has announced that they will consolidate several of their multimedia services into PSN. Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited will both be added to PSN and renamed PS Music and PS Video, respectively. Music Unlimited will shut down in all countries on March 29, while Spotify will be added to PS Music this spring. As a result of today’s news, PlayStation Network will soon consist of PS Music, PS Now, PS Plus, PS Store, PS Video, and PS Vue.

PlayStation 4 version of PlanetSide 2 to enter closed beta on Jan. 20

Sony Online Entertainment has announced that their free-to-play massively multiplayer online shooter PlanetSide 2 will enter closed beta this month for PS4. The initial wave of players, numbering in the thousands, is scheduled to enter the beta on January 20. More players will be added in the coming months, with invitations set to go out in chronological order based on date of sign-up. Players who have yet to send in their info can still do so at the official site; more information can also be found in a new FAQ. A full launch is on track for later this year.

PlayStation 4 passes 18.5 million consoles, 17.8 million titles sold

The PS4’s global sales have surpassed 18.5 million as of January 4, according to Sony. This year’s holiday season’s sells contributed over 4.1 million to the total. Other stats released include that over 81.8 million copies of first- and third-party-developed titles have sold worldwide, with 17.8 million of those being sold during this holiday season, and that 10.9 million owners have signed up to PS Plus.

PlayStation Experience 2014 Highlights – Suikoden II, Street Fighter V

Some big news came out today from Sony’s PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas. The biggest of which is arguably the reveal and announcement of console exclusivity of Street Fighter V. Sony and Capcom have partnered up to release it for PS4, and to make it cross-platform compatible with PC. To keep gamers occupied until then, Capcom is also releasing Ultra Street Fighter IV for PS4. Another surprise came out of Konami, who announced that the highly acclaimed Suikoden I and II will be available on PSN for PS3 and PS Vita next week, on December 9. Sega wasn’t to be outdone, however, with the reveal that Yakuza 5 will be a downloadable release for PS3 in 2015, nor Atlus, who gave Persona fans more to look forward to in 2015 the news that Persona 5 will be available for PS3 and PS4.

Sony is celebrating the PlayStation’s vicennalia with a special 500 GB limited edition PlayStation 4. The PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition costs $499 and is limited to 12,300 units worldwide. Sporting a color scheme reminiscent of the original PlayStation, the 20th Anniversary Edition is being released to celebrate the first model’s December 3, 1994, Japanese launch. All of the accessories, including a controller and PlayStation Camera, as well as the box will sport the original gray color. North American gamers can pre-order a unit from sony.store.com on Saturday, December 6. The full details on when the pre-order link will go live will be revealed at 10:00 a.m. (PST)/noon (CST) during the PlayStation Experience keynote presentation, which will be streamed on Sony’s official Twitch channel.

Five attendees at the automotive trade event will have a chance to have their rides face off for the grand prize of being selected for inclusion as a playable car in an upcoming Gran Turismo by series creator Kazunori Yamauchi.
