Developer- and Publisher-specific Articles: PlatinumGames
Square Enix has announced that the untitled Nier project revealed during E3 has been officially titled Nier: Automata. A new trailer and batch of screenshots were released from the title’s recent presentation at Paris Games Week. The collaboration with PlatinumGames will put players in the role of 2B, a battle android with the YoRHa automated infantry squad. Her assignment is to defeat an army of machines that have forced humanity to flee Earth and seek shelter on the moon. To accomplish her mission, she has access to a sword for close-range combat and a Pod support system to battle ranged enemies. As she progresses, the truth about the origins of the struggle will be revealed.
Activision has released PlatinumGames’ Transformers: Devastation for console and PC. The third-person brawler features a single-player campaign that pits five playable Autobots (Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Wheeljack, and Grimlock) against an army of Decepticons. In addition to the Andy Schmidt-penned story, which expands the current Combiner Wars arc, there are also 50 challenge missions. Characters gain new abilities and talents as players progress, as well as access to more than 150 upgradeable weapons.
Activision has released a new character trailer, an interview with Optimus Prime voice actor Peter Cullen, and pre-order bonus details for Transformers: Devastation. The PlatinumGames-developed title will come with free downloadable content for all those who pre-order, a character skin pack and a weapon pack. The skin pack will come with three alternate costumes (Nemesis Prime, Red Alert, and Goldfire), while the weapon pack will bundle together the Dark Star Saber, the Photon Disruptor, and the twin Gold Hunter blaster pistols. Both videos are available below.
Microsoft made a number of announcements at this year’s gamescom. A few of which include the reveal of Halo Wars 2 for Xbox One and Windows 10, currently in development at Creative Assembly, Killer Instinct Season 3, and the addition of Shadow Complex to the backwards compatibility preview program. Speaking of which, Microsoft plans to have up to 100 Xbox 360 titles supported by the November launch. Other announcements included console bundles for Fifa 16 and Halo 5: Guardians, DVR for Over-the Air TV functionality for Xbox One (a subscription-free service, allowing for streaming and transferring between devices), two Halo 5 wireless controllers ($69.99 each), and a chatpad ($34.99). Details, screens, and movies for the games on display can be found below.
PlatinumGames is a busy studio these days. Not only are they assisting with the upcoming sequel to Nier, but they are also working on a new Transformers title for Activision, Transformers: Devastation. The third-person action title will sport cel-shaded graphics along with a storyline inspired by the IDW comic book universe and some notable voice actors, including Frank Welker (Megatron, Soundwave) and Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime). Combat will be fast and combo heavy, as with other titles from PlatinumGames, and supplemented by upgrades and new weapons. The playable roster will include five Autobots: Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Wheeljack, and Grimlock. Devastation is slated for release later this year.
