All players will have access to the massively multiplayer first-person shooter, which is supported by in-game purchases as well as an optional membership that costs $14.99 a month. Members receive Battle Cash, discounts in the marketplace, access to exclusive promotions and double experience weekends, plus boosts for experience, certs, and resources. Director of development Andy Sites wrote up more about the impending launch at the PS Blog.
The recently rebranded Daybreak Game Company has revealed their new website as well as celebration plans. Beginning today, the studio will be hosting a week of livestreams of titles from their days as Sony Online Entertainment, including DC Universe Online, EverQuest, Landmark, and PlanetSide. In addition to the streams, the studio will also be giving away goodies and announcing other activities. The full schedule is available below.
Sony has sold its MMO-focused division Sony Online Entertainment to New York-based investment management firm Columbus Nova. According to the new owners, “SOE will now operate as an independent game development studio and will continue to focus on creating quality online games, providing excellent service to its extensive player base, while centering on its untapped potential as a multi-platform online gaming company.” As part of the transition from Sony, the studio has been renamed to Daybreak Game Company.
Sony Online Entertainment has announced that their free-to-play massively multiplayer online shooter PlanetSide 2 will enter closed beta this month for PS4. The initial wave of players, numbering in the thousands, is scheduled to enter the beta on January 20. More players will be added in the coming months, with invitations set to go out in chronological order based on date of sign-up. Players who have yet to send in their info can still do so at the official site; more information can also be found in a new FAQ. A full launch is on track for later this year.
Sony Online has announced that they will be bringing two of their biggest MMOs to the PS4, DC Universe Online and PlanetSide 2. As with the other versions, both will be free-to-play with optional in-game purchases. For those keeping count, that brings the total number of free-to-play MMOs on the PS4 up to three: DCUO, Dust 514, and PlanetSide 2.
The first episode of the PlanetSide 2 Command Center Developer video series has been released, with Creative Director Matt Higby and Senior Art Director Tramell Isaac covering a wide range of topics for the upcoming MMOFPS. PlanetSide, one of the first massively multiplayer online first-person shooters, has been chugging along for over eight years now. While that’s impressive, fans have been itching for something more substantial than the random update for quite some time. Today, Sony announced that they are planning to deliver just that with PlanetSide 2. Auraxis will continue to host the war between the Terran Republic, New Conglomerate, and Vanu Sovereignty in their struggle for the planet’s remaining resources. Players will get to unlock traits and skill sets in a “free-form class-based” system as they level, as well as gain access to new squad options and vehicles. Days’ long battles will return as well, with hundreds of troops battling it out in the air, on the ground, and at sea.
