Free-to-play fighter Soulcalibur Lost Swords announced for PS3

Namco Bandai is expanding their line of free-to-play titles later this year with Soulcalibur Lost Swords. Lost Swords, along with Ace Combat Infinity, Ridge Racer Driftopia, and Tekken Revolution, will be a free download via PSN for PlayStation 3. In Lost Swords, players will be able to utilize a new forging system to craft elemental-based weapons from discovered items as well as those scavenged from defeated opponents. Unlike most free-to-play titles, Lost Swords will be single-player only.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle announced for 2014 release

CyberConnect2’s one-on-one fighter JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle will be launching next year in North America for PS3, according to publisher Namco Bandai. Based off of Hirohiko Araki’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure manga, the upcoming brawler will feature a Story Mode, local and online Versus, and a roster filled with characters from all eight story arcs. Each character will utilize one of five Battle Styles and have access to an array of unique special moves.

Dark Souls II Collector’s Edition and Black Armor editions announced

Namco Bandai is sending gamers back to the Dark Souls universe in style with the recently announced Dark Souls II Collector’s Edition and Black Armor Pre-Order Edition. The Collector’s Edition will include a 12” Warrior Knight figurine, a hardcover art book, a color cloth map of the game world, a copy of the soundtrack, and the Black Armor edition’s metal case. As mentioned, the Black Armor Edition will include a special metal case, as well as a copy of the soundtrack, and is available as a free upgrade for those who pre-order. New screenshots were also released and are posted below.

Heihachi and Spawn added to Soulcalibur II HD Online roster

Soulcalibur fans looking forward to Soulcalibur II HD Online received some good news today. Namco Bandai has announced that two of the three console-specific bonus characters that were released with the original 2003 home versions, Tekken’s Heihachi and comic antihero Spawn, will be included with the upcoming 360 and PS3 downloads. The only fighter left to be added from the original lineup is the GameCube-exclusive character, Zelda’s Link.

Dark Souls II closed beta announced for PS3, beginning October 5

PlayStation 3 owners looking for an early dose of pain will be able to get their fix on October 5 when the Closed Beta test launches for Dark Souls II on PSN. Publisher Namco Bandai has announced that, starting September 5, eager adventurers can find out more info about the beta and registration process at the official Facebook page. The beta will feature one of the tougher areas of the game, as well as new enemies and traps.

The Tales series continues today with a brand-new entry, Tales of Xillia. The PS3 exclusive follows medical student Jude Mathis and Milla Maxwell, a shadowy figure who is followed by four invisible creatures, as they venture about Rieze Maxia in a quest to restore mana to the world. The game is played from both perspectives until the two cross paths and join forces after finding out the cause of the disruption. The series’ real-time battle system returns, but it now allows characters to link together for support and linked artes attacks.

Ace Combat goes free to play with PS3 exclusive Ace Combat Infinity

Ace Combat will be returning later this year as a free-to-play release for PS3. The Project Aces-developed Ace Combat Infinity will feature a new storyline set in a campaign that takes place in the near future, which is hinted at by the enhanced tech in the new teaser. Co-op play will also be supported for up to four players, with two teams of two competing to inflict the most damage.

Soulcalibur II will soon be a decade old, and Namco Bandai has announced that they will celebrating with a new, updated version: Soulcalibur II HD Online. The download-only release will be available for 360 and PS3, and feature enhanced visuals, netcode overseen by the Project Soul team, and new online modes. The original mode set will also return: Arcade, Survival, Vs Battle, Time Attack, Survival, Team Battle, Practice, and Weapon Master. No word on if any of the system-specific characters from the original home releases will be returning (fingers crossed for Link!).
