A new mini-game has launched for the console versions of Minecraft, Battle. The free update includes the mode as well as three maps, and more map packs are planned to launch in the future for $2.99 each. The last-man-standing mode has players battle for resources and weapons in booby-trapped arenas. The maps were designed specifically for consoles so that they are “super-accessible and fast-paced, made to support couch-based competition just as easily as online matchmaking.”

MS acquires MinecraftEdu, announces Minecraft: Education Edition

Microsoft is expanding Minecraft’s presence in education with the acquisition of MinecraftEdu. The version, specifically built for classrooms, is being enhanced, renamed, and re-released as Minecraft: Education Edition. The announcement notes that an advisory board of educators is going to assist in the evolution of the product, and that a free trial will be available worldwide this summer. A new site is launching as well, which will feature lesson plans and other resources, including Minecraft Mentors, a program that will allow those who are about to introduce the title to their classroom the chance to reach out to experienced educators.

The console edition of Minecraft received a significant update today. In addition to a number of tweaks to enchanting, fishing, crafting, etc., the patch also brings with it dozens of new pieces of content. Over 30 items, 20-plus blocks, five mobs, and nine biomes are included in the patch. A new tutorial has also been created to acclimate players to all of the additions and changes. Holiday Skins Pack brings the jolly to Minecraft Windows 10, Pocket

Mojang and Microsoft are kicking off the holidays with the Holiday Skins Pack for Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta and Minecraft: Pocket Edition. Skins include Father Christmas, Santa Claus, a Red Nose, and more. Check out the full list below. The pack is $1.99, while two skins, Jumper and Warm Wooly, are free. Teams from both studios will also be getting in the spirit this Friday when they host a livestream, starting at noon, at Mojang’s official Youtube channel.

Microsoft and Code.org release Minecraft-themed coding tutorials

Microsoft has announced a new partnership with Code.org to release Minecraft-inspired coding tutorials. The tutorials, designed by Minecraft game designers, have players interact with characters Alex and Steve in 14 self-guided challenges. Players are also able to further explore the tutorials’ core concepts in free-play time. The tutorials were created for Hour of Code, a global annual campaign held during Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 7-13) that features one-hour introductory experiences aimed at educators and students.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has turned three years old, and to celebrate, Mojang is giving away three free skin packs. The downloads will be available from today until May 17 for all 20 million players on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Two of the packs were already available for the Xbox 360 but are making their Xbox One debut, the 1st Skin Pack and 2nd Birthday Skin Pack, while the Mojangstas pack is new to both versions.

Minecraft has received a handful of new additions, from skins to music. One of the new skins, free for all versions, is Alex, who sports red hair and a ponytail. Xbox 360 owners received some extras today, including 30 new Achievements and new music tracks.
