Star Wars: The Old Republic to embrace free-to-play model this fall
Star Wars: The Old Republic, BioWare’s take on a Star Wars MMO, will be going free-to-play this fall. Well, partly. The game will actually add a free-to-play option, with diehard fans able to keep their subscription for unrestricted access to all content as well as some of the new in-game currency, Cartel Coins. The free option will allow players access to each of the eight characters, though there will be a level limit (50) and restrictions on advanced features and accessing new content. For the free players who want a little more, Cartel Coins can be used to unlock some of the premium material.

World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria to launch in September
Blizzard’s fourth expansion for their long-running MMORPG, World of Warcraft, will hit store shelves and launch online on September 25. Mists of Pandaria will include an entirely new continent, Pandaria, as well as its inhabitants as a new playable race, the Pandaren. Other additions include the Monk class, an increased level cap (90), challenge modes for the expansion’s five-player dungeons, a new type of co-op PvE trials called scenarios, and a new pet battle system.

Free-to-play Phantasy Star Online 2 coming to North America
Phantasy Star Online, the series to bring online role-playing to consoles back in 2000, will be returning as a free-to-play PC release in 2013. Phantasy Star Online 2 will take place in 238, during the New Era of Light, with players joining a band of Arks to battle against D-Arkers.

Guild Wars 2 set to launch this August
NCsoft has revealed that ArenaNet’s upcoming MMO Guild Wars 2 will go live on August 28. Before the official launch, ArenaNet will be holding one more Beta Weekend Event for the weekend of July 20-22.

NCsoft launches Guild Wars 2 pre-purchase program
NCsoft has kicked off its Guild Wars 2 pre-purchase program. Players who pick up the Guild Wars 2 Collector’s, Digital Deluxe, or Standard/Digital Editions before launch will receive entry into beta weekend events and access to the game three days before launch. All pre-purchases will also receive an exclusive in-game, stat-boosting item, the Hero’s Band.

Square Enix launches Ankama’s tactical MMORPG, Wakfu
Square Enix has launched Ankama’s tactical MMORPG, Wakfu. The Mac, Linux, Windows PC release is available as a free download with a premium model that carries a subscription fee of $6 a month. Premium members have access to the highest levels, all areas of the game, all story chapters, 16 professions, the ability to create and join guilds, and the ability to be a governor. Both free and premium members will be able to purchase items, content, and services through the in-game store.
