E3 2014: Square Enix – Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider, Hitman

Final Fantasy Type-0 (PS4, Xbox One)

Square Enix has announced a number of new entries across several series, including Final Fantasy, Hitman, and Tomb Raider. One of the biggest surprises is that Final Fantasy Type-0 and Final Fantasy Agito are both coming to North America. Type-0 was released for PSP in Japan in 2011 and will be brought over as an HD remastered release for PS4 and Xbox One. Agito is a free Android and iOS title (supported with in-app purchases) that features characters from Type-0 and allows players to make changes that affect others within the in-game community. As a cadet in the Dominion of Rubrum, players attempt to become Agito, the savior of Orience, and will have access to a variety of character-customization options, crafting options, and missions that feature large-scale co-op battles involving the entire community. No release dates were announced for either title.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate announced for 3DS, Freedom Unite for iOS

Capcom has announced two new entries in the Monster Hunter franchise: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate for 3DS and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for iOS. Ultimate continues the series’ traditional formula of hunting, gathering, and crafting as a hunter traveling the world in a caravan. A first for the series, handheld gamers will be able to link up both locally and through the Internet by using the Nintendo Network. Other additions include an expanded moveset for greater vertical and lateral range, two new weapon classes, new monsters and locations, refined climbing motions, and the ability to ride monsters.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King out for Android, iOS

Square Enix is celebrating Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King’s 10th anniversary today with the release of a new version for Android and iOS. As the last survivor of King Trode’s army, Hero, players must find the jester who stole the sovereign’s scepter and caused his downfall. The mobile version features revamped touch-panel control with support for one- or two-hand play and a new battle system allowing for direct or automatic control, plus an auto-run mode, alchemy pot for item creation, and the ability to recruit monsters. According to Square Enix, the mobile version features the same 60-plus-hour campaign as the PlayStation 2 original.

Sony adding new features to PS4, PS App, and PS Vita tomorrow

Sony will be releasing new updates tomorrow for PS4, PS App, and PS Vita. The latter updates are largely for improving integration with the PS4, which will itself be receiving a host of new features and long-awaited improvements. A breakdown of each is available below, but PS4 gamers can now look forward to being able to capture gameplay on external devices, edit gameplay footage on the system itself, download pre-ordered games in advance, use voice commands with PS Camera, and easier, improved sorting options for Friends and Trophies.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes detected (!) in stores, online

Konami has released the prequel to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Ground Zeroes. Available in stores and online for 360, PS3, PS4, and Xbox One, Ground Zeroes follows Big Boss as he tackles a rescue mission inside of a Cuban prison camp. The 1975 op sees him sneaking into Camp Omega, which will allow players to attempt the rescue through pure stealth, action, or a combination of the two. The assignment also allows players to exerpience many of the new features, including a day-and-night cycle, dynamic weather, and second-screen functionality with the iDroid App for Android, iOS, and Xbox SmartGlass devices. Additional side missions also extend the gameplay beyond the core mission.

Shin Megami Tensei makes its English debut today, out for iOS

Shin Megami Tensei fans will finally—finally!—get the chance to play the original release with an official translation today. Correction: some fans. Shin Megami Tensei, the one that started it all, is now available on App Stores worldwide for iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch (4th gen or later), and iPad; iOS 4.3 is required. The 40-plus-hour dungeon crawler features many of the elements that have made the series so popular, including the ability to negotiate and recruit demons, character choices that impact the ending, and contrasting alignment scales. As an added bonus, from today through March 31, the game will be reduced from its original price of $7.99 to $5.99.

11 bit studios announces new grim survival sim, This War of Mine

11 bit studios, creators of the Anomaly tower-offense series, has announced their next title: This War of Mine. Currently in development for PC and mobile devices, This War of Mine will require that players “make life-and-death decisions based on their conscience” as they attempt to survive in a makeshift shelter during an ongoing war. Described as a “dark survival game,” players will lead a handful of survivors as they scavenge during the night and spend their days upgrading their shelter, crafting items, and trading with other survivors. Additional details will be revealed at this year’s Game Developers Conference.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes getting early-run DLC, mobile app

Konami has revealed more info about Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain prequel Ground Zeroes. An early-bird bonus will be available for both games, with buyers of the first-run physical or launch-period online copies of Ground Zeroes receiving DLC for Phantom Pain. The pack will add more personnel for Mother Base. The two games will be further linked by the ability to bring over character skins as well as freed prisoners of war and rescued VIPs from Ground Zeroes to Phantom Pain, the latter also serving as staff in Mother Base. It was also announced that the PS4 and Xbox One will also be receiving physical and digital copies of Ground Zeroes for $29.99.

Indie-centric Phoenix Online Publishing launches, line-up detailed

Phoenix Online Studios has announced that they have launched a new indie publishing label, Phoenix Online Publishing. The new studio will release titles both online and in stores from a variety of genres, including role-playing, strategy, and adventure, that feature “rich storytelling and atmosphere.” The initial roster is comprised on four titles: Jane Jensen’s latest adventure, Moebius: Empire Rising; Infamous Quest’s Kickstarter-backed role-playing game Quest for Infamy; The Game Kitchen’s horror-themed adventure title The Last Door: Collector’s Edition; and the hidden-object puzzler Lost Civilization. iPad gamers to get Avadon 2: The Corruption on February 28

Avadon 2: The Corruption, the second release in Spiderweb Software’s latest role-playing series, will be available for iPad on February 28. The Corrution marks the fourth title ported to iOS by Spiderweb, and it’s a direct sequel to The Black Fortress, first released in 2011 for Windows. This follow-up adds a new character type, the Tinkermage class, and as with the first, there are multiple endings that vary depending on whether players choose to save Avadon or let it fall to ruin.
