343 Industries has announced that they will soon be rolling out the first free content update for Halo 5: Guardians. Scheduled to launch later this month, Battle of Shadow and Light will add 48 new REQs, a new assassin animation, and Big Team Battle maps. The new REQs include the ninja-themed Shinobi armor, the legendary Dying Star Light Rifle, Tundra- and Woodland-themed skins, and the Tracer armor set. The new 8v8 Big Team Battle playlist will go live next week with four maps that have been revamped to offer greater mobility: Deadlock, Basin, Guillotine, and Recurve.

Halo 5: Guardians launch sets series, system, and streaming records

A week after its launch, Microsoft has announced that Halo 5: Guardians is “the biggest Halo launch,” taking in more than $400 million in global sales. Guardians is also the fastest-selling system exclusive to date, as well as the most played title on Xbox Live for the week, totaling nine million hours played in nearly seven million matches. Throughout the matches, players got their hands on over 45 million REQ Packs consisting of over 568 million cards. Lastly, Guinness World Records has given the title as the most-watched video game launch broadcast, with over 330,000 unique streams generating over 5.5 million views for the week. Many of the launch events have been archived and uploaded to Xbox.com.

Master Chief is reporting for duty today with the release of Halo 5: Guardians. 343 Industries’ latest is a game of cat and mouse as Spartan Locke and fireteam Osiris pursue Master Chief and his squad. New to the series is the Requisition System for multiplayer. Players purchase packs of digital cards to unlock weapons, customization options, vehicles, and variants for use in Warzone and in Arena (well, cosmetics and boosts in Arena). Halo 5: Guardians has gone gold, according to Microsoft HQ. To celebrate, 343 Industries’ Josh Holmes, head of Internal Development, has released a statement on behalf of the company. Microsoft has released the latest TV spot for Halo 5: Guardians. The live-action commercial aired during NBC Sunday Night Football, and as with their previous ads, it effectively mixes actors with generated environments and effects. If you enjoy the ad and haven’t seen the previous live-action material, follow it up with the series Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn.

343 Industries has released a new trailer for Halo 5: Guardians detailing the game’s Requisition System. The REQ System will be available in all multiplayer modes and reward players with cards that represent over 1,000 items, such as armor, stances, vehicle variants, and weapons. Cards will be cosmetic, permanent, and single use. Only cosmetic and boost cards will be available in Arena, but all will be available in Warzone. Microsoft and 343 Industries have released the opening cinematic from Halo 5: Guardians. The video features Fireteam Osiris, an elite team of Spartans consisting of former ONI Acquisition Specialist Jameson Locke, linguist Olympia Vale, Holly Tanaka, and former ODST service member Edward Buck. Running three and a half minutes, the footage follows the squad after they receive UNSC orders to recover a target and proceed to engage Covenant and Promethean troops.

Microsoft made a number of announcements at this year’s gamescom. A few of which include the reveal of Halo Wars 2 for Xbox One and Windows 10, currently in development at Creative Assembly, Killer Instinct Season 3, and the addition of Shadow Complex to the backwards compatibility preview program. Speaking of which, Microsoft plans to have up to 100 Xbox 360 titles supported by the November launch. Other announcements included console bundles for Fifa 16 and Halo 5: Guardians, DVR for Over-the Air TV functionality for Xbox One (a subscription-free service, allowing for streaming and transferring between devices), two Halo 5 wireless controllers ($69.99 each), and a chatpad ($34.99). Microsoft has released the 12-minute Halo 5: Guardians video documentary they debuted at Comic-Con, A Hero Reborn. The behind-the-scenes look features 343 Industries discussing the development of Guardians, detailing their approach in designing the game from the ground up for Xbox One and Live integration. The doc can be viewed below or on the Halo Channel and downloaded on Android and iOS devices, as well as on Xbox One, Windows Phone, Windows 8.1 PCs, Windows 10 Mobile, and tablets. Another topic covered at the panel was how the studio is linking game’s story to other releases in the franchise, including the newly announced Halo: The Fall of Reach animated series, an adaptation of Eric Nylund’s origin novel, and the second story of Hunt the Truth.
