Microsoft has released the latest TV spot for Halo 5: Guardians. The live-action commercial aired during NBC Sunday Night Football, and as with their previous ads, it effectively mixes actors with generated environments and effects. If you enjoy the ad and haven’t seen the previous live-action material, follow it up with the series Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn.

New Halo 5: Guardians video details multiplayer Requisition System

343 Industries has released a new trailer for Halo 5: Guardians detailing the game’s Requisition System. The REQ System will be available in all multiplayer modes and reward players with cards that represent over 1,000 items, such as armor, stances, vehicle variants, and weapons. Cards will be cosmetic, permanent, and single use. Only cosmetic and boost cards will be available in Arena, but all will be available in Warzone. Halo 5: Guardians opening cinematic introduces Fireteam Osiris

Microsoft and 343 Industries have released the opening cinematic from Halo 5: Guardians. The video features Fireteam Osiris, an elite team of Spartans consisting of former ONI Acquisition Specialist Jameson Locke, linguist Olympia Vale, Holly Tanaka, and former ODST service member Edward Buck. Running three and a half minutes, the footage follows the squad after they receive UNSC orders to recover a target and proceed to engage Covenant and Promethean troops.

Microsoft made a number of announcements at this year’s gamescom. A few of which include the reveal of Halo Wars 2 for Xbox One and Windows 10, currently in development at Creative Assembly, Killer Instinct Season 3, and the addition of Shadow Complex to the backwards compatibility preview program. Speaking of which, Microsoft plans to have up to 100 Xbox 360 titles supported by the November launch. Other announcements included console bundles for Fifa 16 and Halo 5: Guardians, DVR for Over-the Air TV functionality for Xbox One (a subscription-free service, allowing for streaming and transferring between devices), two Halo 5 wireless controllers ($69.99 each), and a chatpad ($34.99). Microsoft has released the 12-minute Halo 5: Guardians video documentary they debuted at Comic-Con, A Hero Reborn. The behind-the-scenes look features 343 Industries discussing the development of Guardians, detailing their approach in designing the game from the ground up for Xbox One and Live integration. The doc can be viewed below or on the Halo Channel and downloaded on Android and iOS devices, as well as on Xbox One, Windows Phone, Windows 8.1 PCs, Windows 10 Mobile, and tablets. Another topic covered at the panel was how the studio is linking game’s story to other releases in the franchise, including the newly announced Halo: The Fall of Reach animated series, an adaptation of Eric Nylund’s origin novel, and the second story of Hunt the Truth.

E3 2015: Microsoft – Backwards compatibility, HoloLens, Gears 4

Microsoft had a lot to show this year, including an on-stage demonstration of HoloLens, details about the upcoming elite controller, gameplay footage from Gears of War 4, and the debut of the Steam Early Access-like program Xbox Game Preview. There was also the biggest surprise of the event, the reveal that backwards compatibility is coming to the Xbox One. The latter is opening the system up to not only a massive back catalog of titles but also some nice bonuses, such as a free copy of Fallout 3 with Fallout 4 and free copies of Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2 with Rainbow Six Siege.

Halo 3: ODST, new map launch for Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Microsoft released new content for Halo: The Master Chief Collection over the weekend. In addition to the new multiplayer map Remnant, a re-imaged version of Halo 2’s Relic, a beefed-up 1080p, 60fps version of Halo 3: ODST’s campaign has also gone live. ODST is free for those who logged into Live and played the Collection between November 11 and December 19, while everyone else can grab it from the Xbox Store for $4.99. Those who qualify for the free version will receive a download code at the email address registered through Live.

The Halo 5: Guardians cover art has been released, along with a quasi-movie showing Master Chief and Spartan Locke facing off. The video also features the Spartan fireteams that hunt Master Chief, and it follows strange images released last week that hinted at the reveal. These follow another cryptic campaign, an episodic audio series that sheds light on what led to Locke squaring off against the Chief.

Halo 5: Guardians gets GameStop-exclusive pre-order armor set

Microsoft has teamed up with GameStop to bring exclusive armor DLC to Halo 5: Guardians. All pre-orders will receive a download code to receive the Spartan Locke multiplayer armor set. The outfit comes with Hunter-Class Armor and a Hunter-Class Helmet, each of which augments the player’s capabilities by offering additional power and enhanced “situational and threat awareness.” A new trailer gives a glimpse of the kit in action.
