Developer- and Publisher-specific Articles: Gears of War 3
Microsoft has reached into their vaults for the latest trailer for Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. Fans of the original might recall a memorable TV spot featuring the song Mad World, and in a fitting nod to the 2006 version, Mad World returns for Ultimate Edition’s launch trailer. Check it out below. And as a reminder, all save files, add-ons, and achievements will carry over to Ultimate Edition, which will also support several Xbox One features, including screenshots, Snap, and DVR.
Everyone who buys Gears of War: Ultimate Edition or the Xbox One bundle will be able to unlock the entire series. Xbox 360 backwards compatibility, announced during E3, will allow gamers who pick up Ultimate Edition between August 25 and December 31 to play the entire run on their Xbox One: Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, and Gears of War: Judgment. Of course, current owners will be able to play them using their own copies, once backwards compatibility goes live for all this fall. All save files, add-ons, and achievements will carry over, and they will also support Xbox One features, such as screenshots, Snap, and DVR. Xbox One gamers in the preview program can play the first Gears of War today.
People Can Fly, the studio behind Painkiller and the ridiculously fun Bulletstorm, is getting their turn at the Gears of War franchise next year with the Epic Games co-developed Gears of War: Judgment. Microsoft has announced that the prequel, set shortly after Emergence Day but before the original Gears, will launch on March 19. In addition to new enemies, locations, and weapons, Judgement will include a new class-based, Horde and Beast hybrid multiplayer mode called OverRun.
It’s time to grab some galoshes and a raincoat because Gears of War 3’s Forces of Nature DLC has hit Live Marketplace. The new pack includes five multiplayer maps: Aftermath, Artillery, Cover, Jacinto, and Raven Down. As the name indicates, each level has a weather theme, with Aftermath featuring a flooding city, tornado-force winds in Artillery, heavy fog in Cover, torrential rains and Imulsion contamination in Jacinto, and snow storms in Raven’s Down.
Gears of War 3’s third DLC pack, Fenix Rising, is now available on Live Marketplace. The follow-up to RAAM’s Shadow includes five new Fenix-themed multiplayer maps, four character skins (Recruit Clayton, Thrashball Cole – Limited Edition, Savage Marauder, and Savage Kantus – Limited Edition), and a new experience system that allows for high-ranking players to “Re-up.” Re-upping allows players who reach level 100 to have their rank and experience reset in exchange for new wing and rank number colors, as well as an exclusive weapon skin. Players can re-up three times, though no other forms of progression, such as the TrueSkill rating, will be reset.
Gears of War 3’s latest campaign DLC, RAAM’s Shadow, is now available on Live Marketplace for 1200 MS Points. The campaign, estimated to be around three hours long, will feature missions for both the Gears and Locusts. While the new Zeta Squad attempts to evacuate the city of Ilima in the face of a Kryll storm shortly after Emergence Day, RAAM turns his attention to a holdout human stronghold.
To help promote Paramount Pictures’ upcoming Brad Bird-directed spy thriller Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Gears of War 3 players will be able to snag a download of the Versus Booster Map Pack for free on Thanksgiving. The DLC includes two new maps (Bullet Marsh and Clocktower) as well as three more from the Horde Command Pack (Azura, Rustlung, and Blood Drive). But there’s more! A free weapon skin pack is also on offer to players from around the globe … but there’s a catch.
To celebrate the launch of Gears of War 3’s Horde Command Pack, Epic Games and Microsoft have announced a free Versus Booster Map Pack set to hit Live Marketplace on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 24). The pack will include five maps, two from the original Gears of War and three from Horde Command Pack: Azura, Blood Drive, Clocktower, Rustlung, and Swamp.
Gears of War 3 will be receiving a new campaign DLC release just in time for the holidays, RAAM’s Shadow. The new pack will launch on December 13 (1200 MS Points) and feature a three-hour-plus campaign set before the first Gears of War, with a cast featuring some new characters as well as some old faces. As a member of Zeta Squad, players will be tasked with providing protection for the evacuees of Ilima City as they set off during a Locust Kryll storm. And for a shift in perspective, RAAM himself will be playable at one point.
