Star Wars: The Old Republic gets Update 1.5, free-to-play option
BioWare has released a new update for Star Wars: The Old Republic, Game Update 1.5: HK-51 Activated, coinciding with the launch of the game’s new free-to-play option. Newcomers can now play the game for free up to level 50, as well as complete the storylines of all eight classes. All players are able to access the new content introduced in Game Update 1.5: HK-51 Activated, which includes a new mode, new areas, and a new Companion character.

Dust 514 gets Codex update, new screens, and Skill Point event
CCP’s massively multiplayer action title Dust 514 gets one step closer to final launch with the release of the latest update, Codex. The newest additions include Corporations, the guild-styled squad system also found in Eve Online, female avatars, new weapons, the Skill system, and more environments. Current players can get the most out of the newly implemented Skills by earning double points from now until November 8.

PC version of Gotham City Imposters now free-to-play from Steam
Another joins the free-to-play ranks today. Warner Bros. has announced that the PC version of Monolith Production’s team-based shooter Gotham City Imposters can now be downloaded for free from Steam. The original game, which features up to a dozen players battling it out over eight Batman-themed maps and four modes, are accessible, as well as all of the new weapons, mascots, and maps that were added via post-launch DLC.

Dust 514 begins integration with Eve Online, new screens released
CCP has sent along some new shotsshots from Gamescom showing off the latest beta build of Dust 514, their upcoming MMOFPS for PS3. Today is also the beginning of the planned extensive integration with CCP’s other MMO, Eve Online for PC. In addition, the update also includes “Orbital Strike framework, instant battle matchmaking, new environments, keyboard and mouse support, and tons of other enhancements.”

Dust 514 beta event announced for PlayStation Plus subscribers
PlayStation Plus subscribers eager to try out CCP Games’ upcoming MMOFPS Dust 514 will be able to jump into the fray next week. A special closed beta event for subscribers will run from August 21 to September 4, but they won’t be alone, as they will be joined by gamers who bought the game’s Mercenary Pack or the All-Access Pass. August 21 also marks the day of the Precursor release, which begins the process of integrating Dust 514 and Eve Online, adding the ability for players to call in orbital strikes, access new environments, and utilize instant battle matchmaking.

Star Wars: The Old Republic to embrace free-to-play model this fall
Star Wars: The Old Republic, BioWare’s take on a Star Wars MMO, will be going free-to-play this fall. Well, partly. The game will actually add a free-to-play option, with diehard fans able to keep their subscription for unrestricted access to all content as well as some of the new in-game currency, Cartel Coins. The free option will allow players access to each of the eight characters, though there will be a level limit (50) and restrictions on advanced features and accessing new content. For the free players who want a little more, Cartel Coins can be used to unlock some of the premium material.

QuakeCon 2012 – Quake Live tournaments detailed
id and Bethesda have released the tournament schedule for this year’s QuakeCon. Scheduled to run August 2-5 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas, the free convention will include a variety of Quake Live events, with competitors going at it in four different tournaments, detailed below, to try to get their hands on some of the $30,000 in prize money up for grabs.

Free-to-play Phantasy Star Online 2 coming to North America
Phantasy Star Online, the series to bring online role-playing to consoles back in 2000, will be returning as a free-to-play PC release in 2013. Phantasy Star Online 2 will take place in 238, during the New Era of Light, with players joining a band of Arks to battle against D-Arkers.

Free-to-play Call of Duty Online heading to China
Activision has announced that they have teamed up with Tencent Holdings Limited to launch Call of Duty Online in China. The multi-year agreement grants Tencent the exclusive license to operate Call of Duty Online, a free-to-play shooter with a microtransaction-based monetization system, in mainland China. The game will feature an original story based around Special Ops missions, a variety of modes and maps, perks specifically tailored to the Chinese market, as well as an in-game store to personalize weapons, characters, and gear.
