First screenshots released from Soulcalibur Lost Swords

Namco Bandia has released the first round of screenshots from their upcoming free-to-play fighter Soulcalibur Lost Swords. The singleplayer-only download will feature a handful of new abilities, and the shots show a few of these in action: the Soul Break moves that can break armor, the powerful Weapon Arts attacks, and the Character Support system, which allows players to call in friends’ characters to give them a hand.

Massively multiplayer first-person shooter Dust 514 received a new update today, Uprising 1.5. CCP’s latest patch features revised tutorials, which are now designed around a reward- and task-given structure; a new Squad Finder that lists all available squads awaiting players, a brief description, and a latency indicator; new War Points; and new Corporation Roles, allowing CEOs and directors to assign additional offices to other corporation members (Accountant, Personnel Director, Terrestrial Combat Officer, and Terrestrial Logistics Officer). Death to the Titans! Ascend: Hand of Kul launches for 360

Microsoft has released a new free-to-play action-RPG for 360, Signal Studios’ Ascend: Hand of Kul. As creations and servants of the gods, players control the massive mighty warriors known as Caos to do battle against the immortal Titans. Not a good spot to find oneself in. But in addition to battling the Titans, players must also defend against attacks from other players to establish themselves in the wider battle that takes place on multiple planes. Caos troops can interfere in the worlds of their rivals with Crusade Spells, and even sacrifice themselves to create a new, stronger character.

Free-to-play fighter Soulcalibur Lost Swords announced for PS3

Namco Bandai is expanding their line of free-to-play titles later this year with Soulcalibur Lost Swords. Lost Swords, along with Ace Combat Infinity, Ridge Racer Driftopia, and Tekken Revolution, will be a free download via PSN for PlayStation 3. In Lost Swords, players will be able to utilize a new forging system to craft elemental-based weapons from discovered items as well as those scavenged from defeated opponents. Unlike most free-to-play titles, Lost Swords will be single-player only.

Thunder debuted in new Killer Instinct c-c-c-ombo video

Killer Instinct’s most recent roster addition, Thunder, is the star in the latest combo video. The footage features his Awesome, Extreme, and Master Combos against the returning (and beefed-up) ninja Jago. Thunder is described as “a hard-hitting grappling character with powerful strikes, aggressive special moves and a devastating command grab.”

Dead Island branches out with free-to-play Dead Island: Epidemic

Deep Silver is taking the Dead Island series down the free-to-play route with a new online-only title, Dead Island: Epidemic. Dubbed a ZOMBA (Zombie Online Multiplayer Battle Arena), Epidemic will be a PC-only release featuring many of the elements the series is known for as three teams face off against one another. More about Epidemic, and what else is in store for the future of the series, will be revealed at gamescom 2013.

Guardian Cross launches on Google Play Store for Android

Square Enix’s free-to-play card battle title Guardian Cross is now available for Android. In Guardian Cross, players face off against fellow Guardians in a Coliseum with a team of some of the over 120 different beasts that can be captured and trained. Originally released for iOS, the Android version features all of the updates and tweaks made to the original since its launch, as well as new card artwork. New guardians, hunting grounds, and quests are also planned in future updates.

Ace Combat goes free to play with PS3 exclusive Ace Combat Infinity

Ace Combat will be returning later this year as a free-to-play release for PS3. The Project Aces-developed Ace Combat Infinity will feature a new storyline set in a campaign that takes place in the near future, which is hinted at by the enhanced tech in the new teaser. Co-op play will also be supported for up to four players, with two teams of two competing to inflict the most damage.

SOE’s DC Universe Online, PlanetSide 2 in development for PS4

Sony Online has announced that they will be bringing two of their biggest MMOs to the PS4, DC Universe Online and PlanetSide 2. As with the other versions, both will be free-to-play with optional in-game purchases. For those keeping count, that brings the total number of free-to-play MMOs on the PS4 up to three: DCUO, Dust 514, and PlanetSide 2.

To the drop pods! CCP Games’ MMOFPS Dust 514 deploys for PS3

After months of stress testing, CCP Games’ free-to-play MMOFPS Dust 154 has transitioned from open beta to final release. The PS3 exclusive links ground-based warfare with the space-based combat of its PC MMORPG counterpart Eve Online to form a fully integrated multi-system universe known as New Eden. CCP plans to release its first update in June, followed by several “major releases” throughout the rest of the year.
