Developer- and Publisher-specific Articles: Dungeon Crawler
Following last spring’s successful Kickstarter campaign, OtherSide Entertainment has released the first look at their sequel to Ultima Underworld, Underworld Ascendant. The studio, founded by Looking Glass co-founder Paul Neurath, has released screenshots and a trailer from the prototype. The footage follows an unarmed rogue facing off against a Shadow Beast guardian after stealing an artifact. The final version is planned to include three factions (Dark Elves, Dwarves, and “mushroom people”), the Improvisation Engine for greater freedom in solving puzzles, three intertwining classes (fighter, mage, and thief), and extended lore penned by Tracy Hickman.
Experience Inc.’s latest dungeon crawler, Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy, is now available for PS Vita. Published by NIS, the Demon Gaze co-developer’s newest title pits players against genetically engineered monsters known as Variants. The beasts are overrunning a near-future Tokyo, and as part of the Xth Squad, players must help to save the city as well as investigate the appearance of portals that lead to a realm known as the Abyss.
inXile has sweetened the pot for The Bard’s Tale IV’s Kickstarter campaign by tossing in a free game. Backers who put towards the game within the first 24 hours of the campaign’s launch will receive a free copy of Wasteland 2, The Witcher, or The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. The freebie is part of the $20 and up reward tiers, and the game will be available once the campaign ends. Wasteland 2 will be delivered via Steam or GOG.com, while both Witchers will be delivered through GOG.com. The campaign is set to kick off on June 2 at 8 a.m. (CST).
Atlus has rolled out a new trailer for their upcoming dungeon crawler Dungeon Travelers 2. The latest video gives an overview of the five foundation classes: fighter, maid, magic user, scout, and spieler. The characters start off as one of the five but will eventually transition into more specialized roles as they gain access to intermediate and advanced classes, though they never forget the basics and can still level up their core skills and abilities—whether it’s casting spells are bashing in monsters’ heads, it’s all about the fundamentals.
inXile is looking to bring back The Bard’s Tale. The studio plans on using the series’ 30th anniversary, June 2, to launch a Kickstarter campaign for The Bard’s Tale IV. The fourth entry will once again be a dungeon crawler set in Skara Brae, and unlike the previous reboot, feature the same labyrinthine dungeons, puzzles, and riddles as the original trilogy. The studio also noted that, as they own the rights to the series, the game will be “rich with callbacks and old favorites such as teleporter zones and magic mouths.” The game will be powered by the Unreal 4 engine, include music inspired and played by Gaelic musicians, and utilize a dynamic phased-based combat system. A teaser shot was also released and is viewable below.
Atlus has revealed the bonus they will be including with pre-order and first-print copies of Dungeon Travelers 2. Early buyers will also receive The Ladies of Dungeon Travelers 2 2015-2016 Calendar, a 17-month calendar featuring the cast. For those curious, Atlus also cleared up what can be expected: “and just like the game, you can go ahead and assume that the calendar is rated M as well.”
Atlus has released a new video showcasing Classic Mode from Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold. Classic follows the series’ traditional formula, with players capable of selecting their own party members, accessing all character-customization options, and tackling dungeons without cutscenes. Untold also features redesigned dungeon layouts and an optional orchestral score.
