Developer- and Publisher-specific Articles: Drakengard
To a few (dignified) squeals from the staff, Square Enix announced that Nier is returning for PS4. The working title is Nier New Project, and as with the previous titles in the universe, including the Drakengard series, the game will be an action-heavy role-playing game. Only this time, PlatinumGames will be assisting by “amplifying the action-oriented combat and building a beautifully diverse visual experience that will fully harness the graphical power of the PlayStation 4 system.”
The last round of downloadable content has launched for Drakengard 3. Over six weapon and outfit packs as well as a prologue and a theme pack are now available on PSN, and each is detailed below. Several of the packs were pre-order bonuses or are from the Collector’s Edition, including three alternate color schemes for Zero, an outfit based off of Caim’s from Nier, a costume based from Nier’s outfit in the Japan-only Nier Replicant, and even a Giant Baby head for Mikhail styled after the bizarre creatures in the first Drakengard. One’s Prologue, formerly a CE exclusive, is also available, which helps to flesh out backstory behind all the bloody mayhem.
Drakengard 3 received several downloadable packs today, adding new missions, music, and costumes. Fans of the original will be able to reduce damage taken by 5% in Furiae’s Garb for $2.99, while fans of Drakengard 2 can reduce stamina loss by sporting the Eris’s Garb pack for $2.99. A music pack for $1.99, the Intoner Arrange Tracks, replaces the tunes played while Zero is in Intoner Mode. The biggest additions are the five Sister Prologues. Each $5.99 chapter (Zero, Two, Three, Four, and Five) includes a playable level and unique weapons, while a $29.99 bundle includes all five plus a bonus prologue for One.
Square Enix has launched Drakengard 3 in stores and online for PS3. As a prequel to the first Drakengard, players will venture around a medieval world in search of six beings known as Intoners. These demigods are the younger sister of protagonist Zero, who is on a mission to kill them, and her motives will be revealed as each is tracked down. In addition to the standard version, a Digital Collector’s Edition comes bundled with all of the extra downloadable content, which includes One’s Prologue, the Japanese voice pack, a giant baby hat (from the original Drakengard) for the dragon, Nier costumes, and six PSN themes.
Square Enix has announced the second wave of pre-order bonuses for their upcoming role-playing game Drakengard 3. The first set of extras included a voice-over pack that featured the original Japanese track, and now, it’s been revealed that players who pre-order before April 8 will receive the Nier Costume Pack. The set features Kainé and Nier Replicant costumes as well as the Emil Hat for the dragon. For series fans, an interview with Takamasa Shiba, producer for all three Drakengard games, is available below and goes into detail about the world, characters, and eight-year gap between titles. Also, to flesh out events leading up to D3, the first chapter of a prequel novella also released on the game’s official site.
Drakengard 3 has been officially dated for May 20. Square Enix is offering the game digitally over PSN but physically exclusively through their online store in a standard form and as a Collector’s Edition. Both versions come with pre-order extras, but which players get depends on when they put in their order. The pre-order system consists of three tiers, and only those who order before March 3 will be eligible for all of the extras. So far, the only known bonus is the Japanese voiceover DLC pack, which is part of the first tier along with two other bonuses. The next tier window is from March 4 to April 8, which include two bonuses, and the last is from April 8 until launch, which includes one bonus. The Collector’s Edition is limited to 5,000 copies and includes the game, a novella, a soundtrack CD sampler, a poster, and three pieces of DLC. The packs include a new prequel mission as Zero’s sister, One; the Giant Baby Hat item for the dragon; and a costume based off the original Drakengard’s Caim.
Square Enix has released over a dozen new screenshots and an announcement trailer for Drakengard 3. The prequel to Drakengard, which is itself a predecessor to the fantastic Nier, is available today in Japan and will be released next year in North America. Check out the new material for dragon combat, flowers protruding out of eye sockets, and more.
The Drakengard role-playing series will return next year with Drakengard 3 for PS3. Square Enix has announced that the next entry will take place in a medieval world that is in chaos after its protectors, six goddess sisters, turn on one another. Players will uncover the truth behind why the eldest sister attempted to murder the youngest in a journey filled with hack-and-slash ground combat and aerial combat on the back of a dragon.
