Mass Effect 3 to get co-op multiplayer
Commander Shepard will have some special help next year when he sets out to retake Earth. BioWare has announced that Mass Effect 3 will be the first in the series to support multiplayer. The online component has been dubbed the Galaxy at War system, and it will complement the single-player storyline by offering “a suite of … games and applications” for players to enjoy with friends. Progress made with others will directly affect the main campaign, as Shepard scours the galaxy for allies against the Reapers.

Dragon Age II – Mark of the Assassin DLC now available for download
Hawke is setting out once again today with the release of the Mark of the Assassin DLC for Dragon Age II. The pack is available for 800 MS Points/800 BioWare Points/$9.99 for 360, Mac, PC, and PS3. Mark of the Assassin adds a new member to the party, the rogue Elven assassin Tallis, voiced by The Guild’s Felicia Day. Hawke must aid her in stealing a relic from an Orlesian Duke in exchange for her assistance with some pesky mercenaries. The scenario, accessible from any safe house at any point within the original campaign, will include new environments and is said to dive deeper into the backstory of the Orlesian and Qunari races.

Star Wars: The Old Republic dated, holiday to be spent on Alderaan
Co-founders of BioWare, Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk, announced at the Eurogamer Expo that the studio’s upcoming MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic will launch on December 20. Currently available for pre-order at select retailers, The Old Republic is set thousands of years before the original trilogy and will feature eight primary classes, each with three fully voiced, unique storylines that evolve depending on the choices made. Quests will be strewn across multiple worlds, including such favorites as Tatooine and Hoth. Gamers wanting to try it out early will receive a code to unlock Early Game Access by pre-ordering, though just how early they will be able to access the game is unknown.

Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes announced, to be Play4Free
Not content with a Star Wars-based MMO, BioWare has announced that they are now tackling Warhammer with the new Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes. Based off of Age of Reconing, Wrath of Heroes is a player-versus-player Play4Free title feature three-team, 18-player arena battles. Players will be able to use a “variety of characters and iconic Warhammer Online heroes, settings, and weapons” as well as switch between heroes and teams mid-battle in a chaotic form of jump-in/jump-out play.

MDK2 rises from its grave, MDK2 HD releasing for PC this summer
Fact: MDK2 was one of the best games on the Dreamcast. Fact: Using a toaster as a weapon is awesome. For gamers who missed out on BioWare’s classic action-platformer, developer Overhaul Games, itself comprised of BioWare vets, and publisher Interplay are bringing it back for the PC in a revamped form dubbed MDK2 HD. Set to launch in September at Beamdog.com for $14.99, the new version will also include “a wide range of gameplay tweaks and reworked audio.”

Tor Books announces third Dragon Age novel, Asunder
Tor Books will be publishing a new novel based on the Dragon Age franchise, Dragon Age: Asunder. The sci-fi publishing juggernaut will again be teaming up with BioWare lead writer and author of the two previous Dragon Age novels, The Stolen Throne and The Calling, David Gaider. Asunder, scheduled for release later this year, will build on the story from Dragon Age II.

Mass Effect 3 release date, screens released
The Reaper’s assault on the galaxy continues next March when Mass Effect 3 launches for the 360 (with Kinect support), PC, and PS3. When gamers rejoin Commander Shepard on March 6, they will find Earth overrun and the denizens of the galaxy on the brink of defeat. As Shepard, players will lead the counterattack to save those that can be saved and sacrifice those that can’t, as some allies and planets must fall to the Reapers for others to continue the fight.
