Role-playing game giants will meet next week when Commander Shepard’s N7 armor makes its way into Final Fantasy XIII-2 as DLC. Serah Farron and Noel Kreiss will both be able to don the N7 gear. In addition to the new panoply, some new opponents, including Ultros, will be stepping into the arena in new Coliseum Battle DLC.

Overhaul Games to update Baldur’s Gate I and II

Overhaul Games will be following up their recent MDK 2 HD re-release with another from BioWare’s library. And not just one, either, but two: Baldur’s Gate I and II. The studio, founded by BioWare alumni, will be releasing updated versions of both titles, dubbed Baldur’s Gate I: Enhanced Edition and Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition. Both versions will feature a “re-forged” version of the famous Infinity Engine, offering “a variety of modern improvements,” and will be handled by some of the team members behind the original series.

Mass Effect 3 hits store shelves, new iOS Apps and DLC launch

It’s time for the millions of Commander Shepards to strap up and get ready because Mass Effect 3 is now available for the 360, PC, and PS3. The trilogy-ending release thrusts players into a massive galactic war as mankind and their allies battle the ancient Reapers. Newcomers will get a chance to meet a large cast of squadmates while series vets will be able to take their old troop into combat once more, for the final time. New to the series is the Galaxy at War system, a co-op online component that ties into the single-player game. Two iOS apps are also available, Mass Effect Infiltrator ($6.99), a cover-based third-person shooter, and Mass Effect 3 Datapad (free). As with Galaxy at War, progress made in the apps will be reflected in the main campaign.

Mass Effect 3 demo launches, spawns millions of Shepards

Gamers itching to try their hand at Mass Effect 3 finally have their chance with a new demo now available for the 360, PC, and PS3. The demo begins with an invasion of Earth by the Reapers and concludes with a single-player mission from later in the game. Players are also able to create a Commander Shepard for their trial run, tweaking name, gender, and appearance. Once those selections are made, plus some for background, the game will then prepare a brief history of this insta-Shephard so that newcomers and series vets alike are able to follow the events included in the demo.

The final leg of Commander Shepard’s journey is nearing, and in what can only be described as a cruel joke on those with loved ones wanting a quiet Valentine’s Day, EA has announced that they will be releasing a demo for BioWare’s Mass Effect 3 on February 14. Bum-bum-bumbum. That phonetically attempted tune can only mean one thing, padawans: Star Wars: The Old Republic is live. BioWare’s galaxy-spanning MMO has launched for the PC and is currently hosting innumerable adventures and adventurers. Set thousands of years before the films, players will side with the Galactic Republic or Sith Empire in one of sci-fi’s greatest wars. Eight character types are available (Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular, Smuggler, Trooper, Bounty Hunter, Imperial Agent, Sith Inquisitor, and Sith Warrior), and each has two subclasses that are further differentiated by their own skill trees. Each character also has their own storyline, complete with a fully voiced cast.

Star Wars: The Old Republic gears up for launch, early access begins

As BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic nears its December 20 release, gamers who have pre-ordered the title will be able to play the game today, starting at 6:00 AM (CST). This Early Game Access program, which will grant pre-order customers entry in waves, is said to “help manage server volumes, helping to ensure a smooth day-one experience” and can be joined by gamers redeeming their access code at the official site. All players will find an already-thriving community as BioWare has tallied over 78,000 guilds from the pre-launch beta sessions alone.

BioWare is dipping their toes into the strategy genre with a new studio, BioWare Victory. The offshoot studio is taking a stab at the long-running Command & Conquer franchise with a follow-up to 2003’s Command & Conquer Generals, currently titled Command & Conquer Generals 2. Scheduled to come out for PC in 2013, Generals 2 will be powered by DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine and feature three sides vying for ultimate power.

Commander Shepard will have some special help next year when he sets out to retake Earth. BioWare has announced that Mass Effect 3 will be the first in the series to support multiplayer. The online component has been dubbed the Galaxy at War system, and it will complement the single-player storyline by offering “a suite of … games and applications” for players to enjoy with friends. Progress made with others will directly affect the main campaign, as Shepard scours the galaxy for allies against the Reapers.
