Developer- and Publisher-specific Articles: Altered Beast
Sega is launching a new mobile initiative tomorrow dubbed Sega Forever. The new program allows gamers to download older Sega titles for free on their mobile devices. Described as “a re-awakening of archetypal gaming” the collection is billed as “an ode to the deep and diverse Sega catalogue.” The free-to-play games will be ad supported but also playable offline, and include extra features, such as cloud saves, controller support, and leaderboards. Ad-free versions are also available at a reduced rate of $1.99 per title. The company plans to add official emulations and ported games from every console era, retaining the originals as faithfully as possible while updating them for mobile platforms. The inaugural set includes Altered Beast, Sonic the Hedgehog, Comix Zone, Kid Chameleon, and Phantasy Star II. Gamers will find them on Google Play Store for Android devices and on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. New titles are set to be added every two weeks.
Sega! has unloaded a bundle of some of their golden oldies on 3DS today with Sega 3D Classics Collection. The nine-game compilation includes two titles that are making their North American debut, including Power Drift and Puyo Puyo 2, with the former being a Yu Suzuki-created kart racer and the latter an addictive puzzler with a versus mode. The remaining seven, all detailed below, include Altered Beast, Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa, Fantasy Zone II W – Fantasy Zone II W, Galaxy Force II, Maze Walker, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Thunder Blade. Several of these have been available on eShop for quite a while, but this is the first time all are being sold in physical form for the system. To get additional insight into the porting process, check out the latest interview conducted by Sega with developer M2.
Sega has announced a retro-themed pre-order bonus for Sega 3D Classics Collection. Early buyers will receive a nine-sticker decal sheet when they pick up the compilation. The set of silver-hued stickers will include a Master System logo and console, a Mega Drive logo, a Genesis logo and console, a 16-Bit logo, a GigaDrive logo, a Professor Asobin, and of course, a Sega logo.
Sega will be bringing the 3DS compilation Sega 3D Classics Collection to North America. Scheduled to launch digitally and physically on April 26, the bundle will include nine games ported over to the system by the current retro-updating standard-bearers M2. The games will include titles from both the Genesis and Master System: Power Drift, Puyo Puyo 2, Maze Walker, Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa, Fantasy Zone II W, Sonic The Hedgehog, Thunder Blade, Galaxy Force II, and Altered Beast. Five of the titles are already available through eShop but four are new to the system. Details for each are available below.
New 3D versions of Sonic the Hedgehog and Altered Beast have been released on eShop for 3DS. The $5.99 downloads include extra features in addition to the extra dimension, including the option for classic graphics (re: pre-flatscreen curved edges), local multiplayer for Altered Beast, and zone select for Sonic. Sega has also posted an excellent lengthy interview about these latest remakes with developer M2 on their official blog.
