Activision has officially revealed Call of Duty: Ghosts. Rumblings about the next entry in the Call of Duty series picked up recently after sales ads listed it for pre-order, and now it’s official. Ghosts is being developed by series creators Infinity Ward, the lead studio behind Modern Warfare 3, and marks the start of a new run, with new characters, a new storyline, and a new engine.

The shift to a new line in the Call of Duty universe was prompted by the current transition to a new generation of consoles, according to Infinity Ward’s executive producer Mark Rubin: “We saw the console transition as the perfect opportunity to start a new chapter for Call of Duty. So we’re building a new sub-brand, a new engine, and a lot of new ideas and experiences for our players. We can’t wait to share them with our community.” That doesn’t mean current-gen gamers will be left out, however, as Ghost has been announced for 360, PC, and PS3 as well.

Infinity Ward will hold a first look at Call of Duty: Ghosts during Xbox: the Next Generation Revealed on May 21 at 10 a.m. (PDT) on Xbox.com and Xbox Live.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is scheduled to be released on November 5.
