Larian joins the growing list of studios who are turning to Kickstarter for funding. The campaign isn’t for Dragon Commander, though, but a new open-world RPG set in the Divinity universe titled Divinity: Original Sin. Things are a little different this time as Larian has been self-funding the game’s development for over two years, and is utilizing Kickstarter to “enhance” the game during its final phase. The extra funds raised will be used to create a secondary design team who will “increase the amount of interesting things you can do in the world, as much as possible” and “increase the depth and diversity.”
At the moment, Original Sin features solo and co-op play with drop-in/drop-out support, class-free progression, heavy world interaction, the ability to chain together skills and spells, a consequence-driven narrative, social stats that influence co-op dialog, and a built-in editor. Rewards include everything from a physical boxed copy to a download of Dragon Commander to helping the team come up with an in-game item.
“Turning to Kickstarter is all about making our game as good as possible for our fans and allowing us to create the experience that we’ve always imagined,” says Larian Studios founder, Swen Vincke. “There’s a lot of potential in the game systems we’ve created so far, so we want to invest everything we can into pushing them further and unlocking their full potential. If we get the extra support from our fans now, I’m very confident that we’ll be able to make something truly exceptional. ”
