Fire Emblem Awakening, the long-running turn-based strategy series from Intelligent Systems, is now available for 3DS. Awakening follows Lord Chrom as he gathers an army, each a unique character with their own personality and skills, in order to battle an emerging evil. Downloadable content in the form of weekly maps was also announced. Each map will offer a wide range of rewards, such as new characters, skills, and class types. The first map is available now for free until March 5, and more free content will be available through SpotPass over the next few months, including new characters, storylines, and items.
As with previous entries in the series, death in battle means the loss of that character for the remainder of the game. For those who find the prospect of losing an invaluable party member terrifying, Awakening also supports a casual mode that turns off perma-death. Other new features include dual strike attacks, with characters pairing up during combat, and those same characters having the chance to form a bond and eventually marry and have children. StreetPass functionality supported as well, with players challenging one another to battle for each other’s leader, with victory bringing the chance to recruit the defeated leader and gain their gold and equipped items.
Fire Emblem Awakening is available digitally on the eShop, but due to a shipping delay, stores won’t have them on shelves for a few days. Fans of the series can opt to forgo the standard release and go all out with a new bundle package that includes a special themed 3DS and the game pre-installed on a 4GB SD card for $199.99.
