CD Projekt RED has released some background info and a new CG teaser for their upcoming open-world, sci-fi-themed role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077. The trailer shows what happens when people go too far with their fancy cybermodifications and turn into a psycho, a situation which requires the delicate touch of the Night City police’s Psycho Squad.
More about the setting was also revealed for those unfamiliar with the pen-and-paper game. In a dystopic future, vast advancements in technology have been matched by the decaying of society as the haves continue to engorge themselves with tech modifications and the have-nots fall under the spell of drugs and virtual distractions. Players take on the role of a man trying to make his way out of the slums, navigating past the psychos, boostergangs, addicts, and various henchmen of the powerful megacorporations.
The creators promise that “Cyberpunk 2077” will be true to the essence of the cyberpunk genre. Players will be thrown into the dark future of the year 2077 and into a world where advanced technologies have become both the salvation and the curse of humanity. A multi-thread, nonlinear story designed for mature players (a CD Projekt RED trademark) will take place in the sprawling metropolis of Night City and its surroundings. Players will have a chance to freely roam the open-world environment and visit places well known from the pen-and-paper RPG “Cyberpunk 2020”, including a combat zone completely taken over by gangs, the legendary Afterlife joint and the nostalgic Forlorn Hope.
