THQ has detailed the weather-simulating technology that Relic will be employing in their upcoming real-time strategy title Company of Heroes 2. To better replicate the Eastern Front, where the temperature dipped to -40 degrees in 1941, Relic will be utilizing the ColdTech system in the new 3.0 version of their Essence Engine.
ColdTech will be used to simulate extreme cold, with units freezing to death if players do not build fires or garrison them inside nearby structures. The game will also feature dynamic blizzards, making the life of the infantryman even more precarious. Snow will be a constant hazard as it will accumulate on objects and the ground, impacting movement speed and both leaving trails for enemies to follow and covering them up. Ice will also deform over time, allowing players to shoot it out from under enemy troops and armor and vice versa. Remember, troops: beware General Frost and his ever-vigilant army.
Company of Heroes 2 is scheduled to launch for PC in early 2013.
