Konami held their pre-E3 show last night and kicked the expo off with a number of announcements. Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid, and the Karoke series were all accounted for, as well as news that a new studio has launched to focus on mobile gaming and all things social.
Fans of the recent Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will be able to continue the adventure in 2013 with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, scheduled to launch for the 360 and PS3. The follow-up to 2010′s Lords of Shadow (Xbox 360 review) features the return of Dracula and his quest to regain his powers in order to face an ominous new threat.
The Karoke series is also returning this fall with Karaoke Joysound for the Wii. Joysound includes over 30 songs on-disc, but it also offers a subscription service from which gamers can access over a thousand songs to rent by streaming the tracks to their Wii. Joysound will also include two mics, minigames, multiplayer, and a focus on customization that is based around players using earned in-game credits to buy accessories, stages, and backgrounds.
And in a throwback promo, Konami will be including a demo for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance in copies of Zone of the Enders HD Collection for the 360 and PS3. The demo will offer players a chance to try the Free Slash mechanics and Zan-Datsu combat system as protagonist and series favorite, Raiden. Zone of the Enders HD Collection is set to launch this fall.
A new studio has also opened in the San Francisco area to focus on social and mobile games, as well as expanding Konami’s efforts in social connectivity. Regarding the new studio, Konami’s president said that it “exemplifies our commitment to providing consumers with high quality social and mobile gaming experiences.”
During the show proper, Konami revealed Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate. The 3DS action-platformer, set to launch this fall, is set 25 years after Lords of Shadow and follows Gabriel’s descendants, Simon and Trevor Belmont. Players will guide Trevor, a knight of the Brotherhood of Light, in his quest to avenge his mother’s murder by seeking out and destroying her killer, his own father: Gabriel Belmont. But Gabriel now goes by the name of Dracula and has become a powerful vampire, and has declared war on the Brotherhood. The story follows the Belmonts through the ages, with each character possessing unique skills and abilities.
Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate is currently in development at Mercury Steam, developers of Lords of Shadow. Mirror of Fate is also serving as a prequel to the upcoming 360 and PS3 sequel, Lords of Shadow 2.
And a bit of an update: Alucard, the popular protagonist from Symphony of the Night, has been confirmed as a playable character.
