Developer inXile is looking to Kickstarter to fund Wasteland 2. The follow-up, twenty years in the making (so to speak), will be to one of the most influential role-playing games ever released, and it will be up to fans to fund its development. inXile stated that Wasteland 2 will be true to the original, with a top-down perspective, turn-based design, and tactical combat. The game will feature moral dilemmas, and decisions which will require choosing the best of only bad options. The studio also wants to work closely with the Kickstarter backers, to ensure that the game created is the one that fans have been wanting.
And what will backers receive? The rewards range from a downloadable, DRM-free copy of the game for $15+ to a large boxed copy, complete with worn cloth game map, instructions, digital soundtrack and art book, plus an episode novella, for $50+. But the ultimate reward is reserved for the $10,000+ crowd, who will receive, in addition to the other rewards, an invitation to an exclusive private party with Brian Fargo, Alan Pavlish, and other members of the team.
According to Fargo, “This is a chance to move the power back to the developers, allowing us to make genres of games that publishers just will no longer support.”
