Commander Shepard will have some special help next year when he sets out to retake Earth. BioWare has announced that Mass Effect 3 will be the first in the series to support multiplayer. The online component has been dubbed the Galaxy at War system, and it will complement the single-player storyline by offering “a suite of … games and applications” for players to enjoy with friends. Progress made with others will directly affect the main campaign, as Shepard scours the galaxy for allies against the Reapers.
Multiplayer will consist of a four-player Special Forces squad being sent out on missions to protect materials that will aid in the war effort against the Reapers. Six classes will be available, as well as six different races: Human, Krogan, Asari, Drell, Salarian, and Turian. The system will be accessible through a single-use Online Pass code, similar to Mass Effect 2 and the Cerberus Network, that will be available with new copies and sold separately for those who purchase the game used.
Mass Effect 3 is slated to hit store shelves for the 360, PC, and PS3 on March 6.
